Jumping as Flemington Race 7 at 4:30pm (AEDT) as the second elite level on the program, this season’s $1.5 million Group 1 Australian Cup (2000m) field is down to 10 starters after the early scratching of Mourinho (2).

Clear favourite in the updated Australian Cup odds through Ladbrokes.com.au paying $3.20 for the win is last start Peter Young Stakes winner Bow Creek for John O’Shea and the Godolphin stable.

The imported Shamardal stallion took out the Group 2 by one and a half-lengths a fortnight ago and is now looking to complete the double last achieved by Fiorente (2014).

The next best in Australian Cup betting this Melbourne Autumn Racing Carnival are Chris Waller’s market mover Preferment ($5.50) who has two wins from three Flemington starts to date and the Lee & Anthony Freedman-trained Caulfield Cup third placed German import Our Ivanhowe ($6) with barrier one.

So can Bow Creek salute for the punters or is there value tipping an upset Australian Cup result from one of the Group 1 winning mares like Rising Romance ($8.50) or the in-form local Suavito ($8.50)?

1st

#2 Preferment ($5.50)

Tipping the upset and have Waller’s Turnbull Stakes winner Preferment as the favourite to improve sharply second-up as he did last time in to win over this distance in Sydney. His resuming run in the Group 1 Chipping Norton Stakes (1600m) produced a fourth to star stablemate Winx on February 27, the form of which will stack-up. He’ll appreciate the extra metres (4-2-1-0) and he’s got the Flemington form to back it up (3-2-0-0) including a Group 1 win at the track / distance from the spring.

2nd

#10 Suavito ($8.50)

Mares have a poor record over the boys in the Australian Cup but for second this Nigel Blackiston-trained Thorn Park five-year-old looks spot-on third-up off a lengthy spell. She’s a multiple Group 1 winner who handles Flemington well (5-2-1-1) and comes off the Futurity Stakes third at Caulfield on the back of her CF Orr Stakes win. Trainer says she’s ready to eat up the 2000m, a distance she’s not been over for a while, and she looks a big hope from gate four.

3rd

#6 Bow Creek ($3.20)

The favourite cannot be left out after the easy Peter Young Stakes win to break his maiden status in Australia. Has a wider alley but time to overcome and he’s against a similar class field to last time out. He was flying once he got into the clear for his last start win and the Peter Young has proven the form-line to follow into the Australian Cup in recent years.
